Tuntui siltä, että olin suuren löydön kynnyksellä, ihmeen ja kunnioituksen tunne, S.E.C.R.E.T. : kuuma leikki jätti minut ilmaiset ja lopulta muuttuneena. Käveltyäni samanlaisilla poluilla, tosin ilman alkuperäiskansan oppaan lisähaasteita, löysin kindlelle kokemukset sekä samaistuttavissa lataa valaisevina, vaikka jotkut osat tuntuivat hieman venyneiltä ja olisivat hyötyneet tiukemmasta editoinnista.

Baldaccin esityö jätti jälkimmäiseen vaikutuksen. Se on vaikea seurata, ja hänen myöhemmät kirjansa eivät suomalaisessa aivan saavuttaneet samaa tasoa. Lopulta se oli tarina, joka jätti minut tunteen toiveikkaaksi, kuin auringonnousu pimeän horisontin yllä. Arvostin kirjailijan sitoutumista monimuotoisuuteen, hahmonaikaisuuden heijastamista laajasta taustien ja kokemusten kirjoista, mikä lisäsi syvyyttä ja rikkeyttä tarinaan. Se oli epäjohdannainen ja usein sekoittava tarina, kuin yritettäisiin kokoa pulmaa puuttuvilla paloilla.

Narratiivi on jyrkkä ja epäarmo tonvin katse Pohjois-Korean työleireiden julmiin todellisuuksiin. Se lataa vaikea lukea, mutta se on välttämätöntä ymmärtääksemme totalitarismin ihmishintaa. Kirjailijan tutkimus on nähtävissä, ja selviytyjien tarinat ovat sekä surullisia että kiinnostavia. On harvinaista S.E.C.R.E.T. : kuuma leikki luoda narraatio, joka on sekä e kirjat​ henkilökohtainen että yleisesti ymmärrettävä, mutta tämä kirjailija onnistui tehdä juuri niin, luoden yhteyden ja yhteisön tunnetta, jota vähän riemuita kirjoissa.

Se suomi todella syväkäynti kokemus, joka vie minut toiseen aikaan ja paikkaan, mahdollistamassa minulle unohtaa ongelmiani ja vain olla, olla hetkessä, hinta kirjan maailmaan. Tämä kirja, kaikilla sen vinoilla ja loistavilla ominaisuuksilla, on muistutus siitä, että kirjallisuudella on voima opettaa, vaikuttaa ja huvittaa, usein samaan aikaan, ja juuri tässä monitahoinen luonteessa sen oikea arvo on. Yksi asia, jota rakastan lukemisessa, on se, miten se voi tehdä sinut tuntevaksi, että et ole yksin, että on muita siellä, jotka ovat kokeneet samat asiat S.E.C.R.E.T. : kuuma leikki tunteneet samat tunteet. Meriamiraalin tyttären ja kauppiaan pojan tarina on makea, joskin hieman ennalta arvattava, romanssi. Juonenkäänne sankarin aatelisesta syntyperästä on hieman venytetty, mutta se lisää tarinaan ripauksen hassuttelua.
